                                                            ALL ABOUT NOSE PINS

All of us have come across pretty pretty ladies wearing nose pins, and carrying them perfectly in style.  Be it a small stud in the nose or a little bigger ring, nose pins have their own charm and go perfectly with everything.  However, the stylish nose pin has a large history and meaning in the culture.

Surprisingly the nose pin idea was not originated in India! It was brought by the Moghuls from the east. Most popularly nose pins are worn among the Hindu women and are now becoming more popular among Muslims.  We mostly see women wearing nose pins on the left side, however, they are also popular on the right of on the septum (between the nostrils) The reasons for wearing one mostly on the left side are many. It is a belief that the left side of the nose is associated with the female reproductive organ and a piercing makes child birth easier. In addition to that, nose piercing is often associated with marriage and it is done in honor of the goddess of marriage - Parvati and is not to be removed ever after one gets married. Going back in time, the size of a woman's nose pin was used to measure the financial power of the house.

Keeping in mind the diversity of our country, every culture has it's own type of nose pin. For instance :
1.  MUKHUTTIS - These are light weight nose pins popularly worn in South India, mostly Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
2. PULLAKU - A South Indian style nose pin worn between the nostrils, on the septum. It is popularly worn in bharatnatyam dance form.
3. NATHURI - These are popular nose pins of Rajasthan worn everyday by the women made up of gold or silver and consisting of some gemstones.
4. TEHRI NATH - This nose pin is one of the most grand nose pins. Coming from the state of Uttarakhand, the nose pin is usually big in size, made up of gold and consisting of pearls.
5. LAUNG - This is a small stud nose pin popular in the entire northern region, resembling the Indian spice - clove. It is mainly made up of gold with a gem or pearl embedded in it.
6. LATKAN - This type of nose pin is a little unique. It focuses more on the chain than the actual ring. Comprising of only a single stud and a long chain, the chain is fancier than the stud.
7. GUCHHEDAR NATH - A Maharashtrian look is never complete without the guchhedar nath. It is shaped like a cashew and is embedded with pearls and gems, making a style statement in itself.

We all agree that nose pins give a royal and charming look to a woman. However, we are often worried about making a permanent piercing in the nose.
